November 2010 We were pretty busy this month. In addition to doing all we can to keep our clients happy: · Michael attended the APAA 58th Council Meeting in Jeju, Republic of Korea. · Michael was invited to give a talk to Academics and Staff at Republic Polytechnic on the patenting of computer-related (software) inventions.
September 2010 Michael fulfilled his teaching duties for another year as a guest lecturer in Patent Law and Practice at the National University of Singapore (NUS) for a module in IP Laws for Engineers and Scientists. The module is part of a Masters of Science course run by the Division of Engineering & Technology Management, within the Faculty of Engineering at NUS.

May 2009 Michael has been appointed to the Executive Committee of the Association of Singapore Patent Agents (ASPA). As set out on the ASPA website, ASPA consists of members who are engaged in patent work in Singapore and registered with the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) as patent agents as well as members who are undergoing training to qualify as patent agents.
April 2009 · Michael has recently started an “ITllectual Property” blog published on the MIS Asia website for Fairfax Business Media. The blog will be exploring topics in intellectual property law of interest to the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) industries. The blog entries are accessible here. The MIS Asia website is run by Fairfax Business Media, and their magazine publications include MIS Asia, CIO Asia Magazine, Computerworld Singapore and Computerworld Malaysia. · Michael has been invited by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) to sit on the Examination Committee for the Singapore Patent Agents Qualifying Examination 2009. The Examination Committee is responsible for setting and moderating the examination papers and to provide recommendations on candidates’ performances to the Examination Board of IPOS.
February 2009 · Michael was invited by the Industry Liaison Office of the National University of Singapore to give a seminar on The Patenting of Computer-Related Inventions and Software. The seminar was given in conjunction with visiting Professor Liu Shiang-Jyh, from the university’s Division of Engineering and Technology Management within the Faculty of Engineering. A flyer for the seminar may be found here. · Michael was invited by the Fellowship of Inventors to give the second part of a talk on patents, entitled David vs Goliath - The Infringement War, following on from the talk given the previous month. This month’s discussion covered: 1) the concept of enforcement and infringement of Intellectual Property; 2) the way in which it differs in various countries — such as the USA, China and India; 3) the typical process of engagement in an infringement case leading up to the court and when is the "point of no return”; and 4) Does "big" always win? Does size matter? This session was also given with in conjunction with Dr Khoo Chong Yee and with the help and expertise of Mr Wong Siew Hong of Infinitus Law Corporation.
January 2009 · Michael was invited by the Fellowship of Inventors to give a talk on “Patents and IP 101”. The talk was given in conjunction with Dr Khoo Chong Yee of Cantab LLP, and gave a general introduction to IP. The various types of IP available were discussed, prior to focussing on the patent system and patenting strategies. A case study on the drafting and processing of a patent application was covered.
November 2008 · Michael was invited to give a talk entitled “An Introduction on Intellectual Property and Patents” at an event co-hosted by the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the NUS Society. The talk covered the various types of intellectual property rights available and the differences between these types, and then covered in a little more detail patent law and practice with a review of the anatomy of a patent specification. The talk closed with a brief review of some interesting patents and patent applications. A flyer for the talk can be viewed here.
